Sa Calobra, January 2022
Ben Roberts
I first visited Mallorca in the spring of 2014 – like thousands of cyclists before and after me, I was drawn to the island by the prospect of testing myself on the winding roads of the Serra de Tramuntana, the wild rocky mountains that span the island’s northern coastline.
Perhaps the most mythical of these climbs is Sa Calobra. Its a road that has it all – breathtaking scenery, winding hairpins, smooth and clean tarmac. However, what makes the climb memorable is that before you tackle the ascent, you must descend to the cove at the foot of the climb, where you can have a coffee and catch your breath, before struggling back up the curves that flashed by just minutes previously.
I returned to Mallorca earlier this year on assignment, and gifted with a rare free afternoon, I drove out to the Tramuntana and watched a few professional cyclists descend into the depths of the valley, limbering up for the season ahead.
If you have tested yourself against the professionals on Sa Calobra, this image of the fabled road will serve as a reminder of your trip, and hopefully inspiration to return.
