Back in September of 2007, I travelled out to Granada in Andalucia with my friend Hin Chua. I had just completed my first full year in London after completing my photography studies, and needed to take some time out. The plan was to enjoy the city, eat well, and take a few photographs in between siestas. To a certain extent we stuck to our plan, but when we ventured out of the tourist areas I was taken aback by the extent and scale of housing construction on the edges of the city. 

Spain was approaching the pinnacle of it’s construction boom and subsequent bust, and this trip marked the start of a 5 year project documenting the landscapes of the nation’s ‘crisis’. 

Towards the end of our trip, we ventured far out of the city, into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. In a neighbourhood called Genil, we rounded a corner and found ourselves at the foot of Calle Ojos de Salado (in English that’s ‘Salty Eyes Street!). It was a strange place – dusty and unfinished, and the warm evening light bathed the orange walls in an atmospheric glow. I don’t remember the grey cloud looming over the brow of the hill, but when I returned to London and developed the film, I realised that it was an image where everything had fallen into place. 

This photograph is printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag. This white cotton artist’s paper, with its characteristic, wonderfully soft feel, boasts a lightly defined felt structure, lending each artwork a three-dimensional appearance and impressive pictorial depth.
