Smoke and dust rises over the pit walls after a blast. Blasting can only take place when the prevailing winds are away from the town, which is literally a few hundred metres from the mine edge. Currently 400m deep and a over a mile long, by the time mining finishes in 2017, the mine will be 640m deep – the bottom of the mine will be well below sea level.
